Bashenga was not the original Black Panther, according to the canon of Marvel Comics, but he was the first king of what would eventually become Wakanda. This distinction belonged to a guy by the name of Mosi who, in the year 1,000,000 B.C., joined a prehistoric Avengers team after being picked by the panther goddess Bast. Bashenga saw a terrible vision following Mosi's passing. The vibranium-only meteorite known as The Great Mound, which had come to rest in Wakanda, was bursting at the seams with the massive energies it had absorbed throughout its passage through space. A catastrophic chain reaction would soon be triggered by that energy.
Bashenga devised the spear and
the blade Skybreaker from pure vibranium in order to halt the domino effect.
After using the weapons to absorb the extra energy, he launched them into the
center of Wakanda. Because of his heroic deed, the Wakandans elected him as
their first-ever monarch and the successor to the Black Panther. Skybreaker and
Bashenga's spear had landed where Birin Bashenga, one of Wakanda's most opulent
cities, would be built. As it identifies them as royalty, every king of Wakanda
has wielded the Spear of Bashenga.
In the comics, Bashenga was the
one to unify the five tribes of Wakanda as they went to fight over the Great
Mound. He did so after being guided to the heart-shaped herb by a revelation
from Bast. He became the first Black Panther after ingesting it and gaining
superhuman strength and senses.
Bashenga is also referenced twice in Wakanda Forever. Initially, he is mentioned as the first king of Wakanda during T'Challa's burial. His Black Panther suit, as well as his spear and sword, are buried alongside the mughal emperor shah jahan of Wakanda. Then he is mentioned while addressing Namor's kingdom of Talokan's access to vibranium, which calls into question every mythology and myth that the Wakandans followed. Bashenga's reputation has been an important element of the Black Panther mythos and will surely remain so if a third movie hits theaters.
